I’m Losing My Hair!

Hair loss can be devastating, especially for women. According to Health.com, there are a lot of reasons that you may lose your hair. Many times it is temporary. Chemotherapy is the most common reason for complete hair loss.

Are you aware that stress can cause hair loss? That stress can be from a physical illness and may occur as long as 3-6 months after the illness. Pregnancy is another physical stress along with hormones that can cause temporary hair loss. Luckily this corrects itself after delivery.

There are other reasons for hair loss that you might be causing such as taking in too much vitamin A in supplement form. If you are taking more than 5,000 International Units, cut back and your hair should grow back normally. Another issue that you may be doing is not getting enough protein. Protein is easy to add to your diet and comes in many forms such at meat, fish, eggs as well as many vegetarian protein sources.

For many women anemia may be the cause of their hair loss. This is also correctable once diagnosed. If your thyroid is not working correctly, you could experience hair loss. An autoimmune disorder, like Lupus may be the cause of your hair loss. With this type, your body is not likely to repair the damaged patches so you will either have to change your hairstyle or wear a wig. Very sudden weigh loss can also cause hair loss. Often times this can be a sign of an eating disorder in adolescents. Just like pregnancy, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) can cause hair loss due to the hormone imbalance it causes.

Some medications can cause hair loss such as Methotrexate used for rheumatoid arthritis, some anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen, beta blockers used for hypertension and blood thinners. If you think any of these classes of medications may be causing your hair loss, discuss with your physician. Some women in particular have their hair done with very tight braiding or relaxers which are hard on your hair and can lead to hair loss. One of the most common reasons for hair loss is simply aging.
